A quick sketch of Venice that captures the architecture and atmosphere of this remarkable city and its canals. Lack would work quickly on these type of sketches, a “visual shorthand” to record a scene that caught his interest. He continued this practice throughout his career to record or capture a scene. In this case I suspect this could have been done from memory; he kept several from this trip. While the others are inscribed “from memory” I think it highly unlikely this one would be the only sketch among the few he kept that wasn’t from memory. It’s a brown ink wash with black used to bring out the structures and other details that would have been difficult to do on-site.
